Recovery Fee Scams: When Help Becomes Another Demand

The approach often refers to a previous loss

Someone may contact you claiming to know about money you lost. They may present themselves as a public agency, law firm or recovery specialist. Knowing part of your story does not verify their identity.

Look at what you are being asked to pay

Requests for processing fees, taxes or access charges can be framed as the last step before a refund. A promise of reimbursement does not make an advance payment safe, even when it comes with an official-looking document.

Verify the organization independently

Use an address or contact number you obtain separately. Check the claimed organization rather than relying on the message, testimonial or link supplied by the person asking for payment. Avoid sharing sensitive account information while checking.

Keep a record of the new approach

Retain messages, names used and payment instructions. If another transfer has already happened, contact the payment provider through its official channel and report the incident to the appropriate authorities. No private promise guarantees a refund.
