What to Keep After a Suspected Online Scam

Keep original communications

Save emails with their full headers where available, exported conversations and relevant web pages. Screenshots can help explain what appeared on screen, but they should supplement original records rather than replace them.

Collect payment records together

Keep bank and card receipts, transfer confirmations and cryptocurrency records. Record who received the payment, the date, amount and account details. Distinguish information shown on a platform from a receipt issued by a payment provider.

Write a factual timeline

List when contact began, which accounts or websites were used and when payments were requested. Note where each detail came from. Mark uncertain dates and recollections instead of presenting guesses as established facts.

Store records securely

Keep original documents in a safe location and work from copies when organizing your summary. Follow the reporting channel?s instructions about what to submit. Retaining records supports a later review; it does not guarantee an investigation or recovery.
